MacDailyNews App Reviews

92 add

What a mess

This new version is worse the the last. Ill ignore that fact that the menu can only be accessed from an article. Good job on finding a way to insert more ads. I looked at one article and I had the iAd at the bottom and a horizontal ad stacked on that, 2 rectangular ads stacked on that. THIS is the reason there are content blockers. 7 total ads and you wrote 1.5 sentences.

New version stinks

The new version just incorporates web ads into the mobile interface. Its slower and more cluttered. If you havent upgraded already, dont. The old version was much better. I deleted the app from my iPhone and iPad. Theres really no point in using it after this redesign.

Dislike this new version even more.

Never been a good app. This ones even worse. Takes longer to load. Articles do not load until you enter them.

Doesnt work with iOS 8

Apparently badges will never work with this app; however, the newest version has eliminated native article text for referring to a web page. The comments are now at the bottom (after a bunch of ads). And it seems to want me to type in my name and email address to comment where before it used to know who I was. Sadly, this app is causing me to delete it from my phone and find a different Apple news source.

Update not worth it

Unless you like more ads in all the articles.

Deleting

I like MDN for Apple news but the new version just takes you to their website and is loaded with ads. The last version was easy to navigate and go back to the list of articles. Whoever runs this site has been saying that Apple has been putting out some Beta versions of its apps lately, MDN follow your own advice and improve your app and really think about the user experience.

I agree - dont update

MDN is a great source of info but I afraid they broke the app with this update. My favorite, most-used feature, "Favorites" is now gone. I cant save an article for future reference, which I did frequently. Im not crazy about the far more intrusive ads, either. Although Im a big fan of MacDailyNews, Im afraid I have to say Im not a big fan of this app update. Stick with the older version if you can.

Slow loading

This app was slow loading the articles. I just bookmarked the website on my homepage. Loads much faster than the app and looks fine.

Always something wrong

Garbage again. Tons of ads, not easy to post to the forum. This shouldnt even qualify as an "app", its more of a web app built into an app, which shouldnt have even passed Apples app review guidelines. You would think MDN would have the top-of-the-line best quality iOS app out there, but they just dont care at all instead. Oh and if youre an advertiser of MDN, you may want to know their app seems to be designed to get false clicks. Every time I open the comments to write something on the board, the keyboard keeps falling down, forcing me into accidentally clicking an ad that I must close, which refreshes the whole page again, and the cycle repeats. Every time I want to leave a comment, I mistakenly click on about 3 ads. MDN: You should be striving to make the iOS app the best iOS experience. If you really want to force us to use Safari, as it currently seems, we will (with ad-blockers on). Have you considered a paid subscription with no ads? We LIKED having the two tabs for story and comments. I liked having all comments on the same page (nobody is going to click next page). Have you guys really designed this thinking "this is the highest quality iOS app Ive ever seen"? Thats what I would expect from MDN considering your niche. How about a subscription-based no-ads version? I would pay $4.99/month to never see another MDN ad again, but only if your app was far superior to what it is today. I was proud of you guys when you ditched the Google, et al ads in favor of just iAd in the app, and then boom not only do you reverse it, but its designed more like pop-up malware, rendering the app mostly unusable. Ugh so angry because I spend a LOT of time on MDN reading every story. Way back in the day, your notifications would also actually open the relevant story when I clicked it, and the list of notifications would be retained until I clicked each one individually. That was how I kept track of everything and made sure I read them all, but not anymore. (At least they do pop up now again though). Come on guys! What are you, paying some random craigslist developer to build your app for $1000? Ive written only a few apps, but there are about 5 things wrong with this that even I could fix for free! Maybe you could just have a giveaway competition. So many of your readers are inherently iOS developers. "Design MDN the best award-winning iOS app, win a free cellular iPad Pro in color of your choice" or something. Then at least it would be designed by your readers, who care the most about it being the greatest iOS app of all time. Sorry for the rant, but this is a part of my life youre screwing up.

Comment Button Removed

With the new v. they removed the Comment button at the bottom to skip straight to comments. Now you have to scroll through a long pile of gobbledygook to get to them. I went from using the app daily on the phone to not even launching it because of this. At least I have the old version on the iPad, preserving the button.

Theme - More ads and slower

I can see the development meeting now... SteveJack, how can we increase as views now that all these ad blockers are out for browsers on both mobile and desktop? How about we replace our clean feed driven mobile client with just a skinned Webview? That way we can keep our outdated business model and force more ads down our most loyal readers throat! Sure it might be slower and less enjoyable than the app were replacing, but thats never stopped us before when praying to the ad impression gods.

Needs Apple Watch support

The app needs Apple Watch support!

Nightmare

App is loaded with pop up ads which nearly makes it impossible to use. The future is apps just died here. Time to start just accessing the website through a browser with a really good ad blocker

Do not download.

This is basically a front for serving up unauthorized advertisements. I cant read a single article without an un-exitable ad popping up and ruining things. I strongly do not recommend this app.

"Your dead to me"

My title tells it all "Your dead to me" is phrase use by OLeary on The Shark Tank TV show, to indicate that the product has no future in its present mode. This used to be my #1 go to place for Mac news since it first came out. Now with the new adds that block the text & will not go away, I have sent this app to the trashcan. So long old friend, sad to see you go. ☹️

Advertising blocks content

Every once in a while this group posts something worth looking at but lately the adds cover half the article and are all over the rest of the screen do they look at how the advertising is killing this?

Do you know?

Do you know that the ads in your app cover the text in the articles you are writing? As it is now, this is a poor excuse for an app. THIS SHOUKD BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY!

App is too annoying

2/16/16 Gave played withnew version for sometime. For past week it will not load any stories. I can only read stories if I go direct in Safari. Good thing about Safari is there are no ads when you read the story. Prior to upgrade I had these comments. This was one of my favorite apps until the new version came out. Now it is the most annoying app I have. If you click on a story to read, up it comes, nice and fast. Then the screen scrolls down and pops a commercial at the top of the screen. Continue reading your story and it closes the commercial causing the screen to roll to the top, then comes the new commercial and the screen rolls again to display it. Try reading a long story and it bounces up and down so much you start to get dizzy. What a dumb feature.

Ads Make It Awful

The pop-up ads are unacceptable. Im planning to switch to the web, or simply stop using the site altogether.

Ads are out of control!

Had to delete it. It was ok when there were just lots of ads. But now the ads self launch and self launch into the App Store etc. It just became too obnoxious.
